Food Waste in Australia

dumpster001

In Australia 4 million tons of edible food get wasted each year.

Another study suggests worldwide it is about 2 billion tons each year, 30 to 50 percent of the produced food is never be eaten.

The food and agriculture department of the United Nations reckons that 28 percent of the world’s agricultural area is used  to produce food that is lost or wasted.

This numbers are hard to imagine and to the normal consumer the food waste is not always visible. But if you would take a look in the garbage bins behind any supermarket (particularly in the rich parts of the world) you would be surprised what you can find.

Even though the big supermarkets have strategys and goals to become more environmental friendly and sustainable, a lot of good and edible food gets thrown away. Aldi states in their Corporate Responsibility Terms:

“We act responsibly in terms of the environment and work to protect our earth’s climate.”

Woolworth has a “Zero food waste to landfill by 2015 policy” (just extended to 2020) . In their Sustainability Report 2014 it reads:
“Woolworth has diverted an estimated 40,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill and we continue to identify new solutions for food waste”

This reads all good but how is it in reality? Is all the food waste donated to charities or recycled into animal feed? In “The Melbourne Trash Hunt” you can watch some people who identified a new solution and take direct action against the food waste. Enjoy!
